The Challenge
ShareABike is a publicly funded bike-sharing project, created by the Universities of Mons and Namur between 2014 and 2020. The ShareABike bike-share platform offers a complete software solution with an administrative interface and ShareABike mobile bike rental app. The ShareABike concept and app encourage members of the ShareABike community to rent bikes wherever ShareABike is available.
In 2021, Pro Velo acquired the operating license to launch ShareABike across business centers, private corporate campuses, and will soon launch the first public bike share for a small town, Hannut, near Liège.
Pro Velo tested ShareABike with Noké smart locks but found the hardware was incompatible with their bike-sharing requirement. ShareABike by Pro Velo sought a specific lock for bikes that would fit on their fleet of bikes and would integrate with their existing mobile application and administration software.

The Solution
Pro Velo launched their ShareABike bike share with Original LINKA and LINKA Chains using LINKA’s SDK integration. The simple SDK integration successfully enabled ShareABike’s mobile app to operate Original LINKA’s lock/unlock functionality with one tap, once the bike was rented.

LINKA’s Impact
LINKA contributed to the success of the ShareABike by Pro Velo project. The first successful pilot has led to a growing number of opportunities to expand ShareABike’s presence with a small town public bike share next in the implementation phase.
